What's in a name
Every week, people from all walks of Singapore life step through the doors at 8A Mayo Street — some longtime practitioners, some simply curious. They arrive at a place whose name carries an aspiration: Tashi means auspiciousness, Gephel means increasing virtues, and Ling means park. Tashi Gephelling, then, is a garden where goodness is meant to grow — in each of us, week by week, prayer by prayer.
A teacher's seat in Singapore
Our centre is the Singapore seat of Bise Rinpoche, recognised by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the 5th Bise Rinpoche. Trained at Sera Jey Monastic University, where he earned the Geshe degree — the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy — Rinpoche brings to our small centre the depth of a great monastic tradition, offered with warmth, humour, and patience for beginners and old students alike.
Saturday prayers at Mayo Street
The heart of our community is simple: we gather on Saturdays to pray together. There is something quietly powerful about reciting prayers in a room full of people who have set aside the week's busyness for an hour of stillness. Newcomers are always welcome — no experience is needed, and there is no better introduction to the centre than simply sitting with us once.
Pujas, offerings, and service
Beyond the weekly prayers, TGBC hosts special pujas through the year — Medicine Buddha prayers for healing and long life, Tara prayers, lamp offerings, and sponsorships that support the sangha at Sera Jey and Drepung monasteries in India. Every offering made through the centre is dedicated back to the sponsors and to all beings, in keeping with our commitment to transparency as a Singapore-registered non-profit.
A weekly note from us
Starting this week, we will share a short post here each week — on our prayers and pujas, the meaning behind the practices, upcoming events, and the projects our community supports, from the Namgyalma Stupa in Malaysia to food offerings for the monks of Sera. We hope these notes bring a little of the centre's calm into your week, wherever you are reading from.
May auspiciousness and virtue increase for all beings. With warm wishes from all of us at Tashi Gephelling Buddhist Centre.
