Origin Story:
The story of Cittamani Tara is connected to the broader story of Tara, who was originally born from the compassionate tears of Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion). When Avalokiteshvara saw the immense suffering of sentient beings and began to cry, a tear dropped to the ground, and from this tear, Tara arose.
In the specific case of Cittamani Tara, her teachings were revealed by Tara herself to the Rinpoche Takpu Dorje Chang, a great Tibetan master. Tara is said to have appeared directly to him and gave him the practice and teachings in a visionary experience. She instructed him in this profound path of meditation to liberate beings from suffering quickly.
Cittamani Tara’s Role and Significance:
Cittamani Tara, as a Highest Yoga Tantra practice, incorporates both the generation and completion stages of meditation. The practitioner visualizes themselves as Tara, symbolizing the inseparability of wisdom and compassion. Her practice emphasizes quick enlightenment within a single lifetime, making it highly revered among Tibetan Buddhists.
This form of Tara is especially associated with overcoming obstacles, alleviating suffering, and providing spiritual protection to practitioners. Her name, “Cittamani” (or “Mind Jewel”), signifies the mind’s potential to transform into the pure state of Buddhahood, like a jewel that shines brightly once polished.
